Our History
With over a century of innovative solutions, Greene, Tweed develops successful applications while engineering and designing tomorrow's technological answers today. From the start, we've adapted our expertise to meet the diverse needs of our customers. Borne out of a partnership between friends and brothers in 1863, Greene, Tweed has become a successful global leader by leveraging expertise in a variety of industries. This pattern of growth and development began when the original distribution business entered the packing industry with Palmetto in 1873. After surveying the external environment, we decided to move from natural packing into synthetic packing material.

An early product in our portfolio, the G-T® Ring, was introduced and approved for use in the landing gear of the F-4 Phantom in 1964. The G-T Ring remains a core product in Aerospace landing gear today.

As our business developed, strategy warranted the establishment of our corporate headquarters in Kulpsville, Pa., U.S.A. in the 1970s. With this foothold, we expanded around the globe. In the early 1980s we introduced several versatile elastomers, such as Fluoraz®, and designed pioneering product geometries, such as the first "capped seal." Arlon®, a tough, high-temperature, semi-crystalline engineering polymer, also joined the product line, followed shortly by one of Greene, Tweed's most innovative products, Chemraz®, a chemical-resistant elastomer, effective in the most extreme temperatures.

Recognizing the race toward a global economy, Greene, Tweed began geographic expansion by opening offices in Germany, England and France. By the mid 1980s, Greene, Tweed had established a presence in the Pacific with a Japanese office. The Asian market has maintained its pattern of growth with additional offices today in Singapore, Korea and Taiwan.

Our drive to continuously learn and develop has led us to acquire businesses that help us gain specialty knowledge of certain industries, e.g., the Oilfield market. Evidence of this desire to learn and grow can be seen in our creation of cleaner products in the semiconductor market. We constructed a class 100/1000 room at our headquarters in Pennsylvania and a sister state-of the-art facility in Selma, Texas. In 1996 we developed custom connectors under the tradename Seal-Connect®, satisfying customer demand for electrical connectors able to withstand the same environments as our seals. Expanding our capabilities further in the PetroChem & Power market, we developed WR®, our high performance, wear resistant, carbon-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite.

The turn of the century ushered in a new product, Orthtek®, a lightweight, thermoplastic composite with high-strength and radiolucent properties, that satisfies the demands of the Medical and Biotechnology industry. Our worldwide expansion has continued with new offices in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Israel. Our tradition of creative and innovative ideas has also grown with the development of a new range of solutions, from new composite technologies to fiber optic and extreme electrical connectors.

Growth and innovation are critical to Greene, Tweed. Our ability to seek out new niche markets is as important to us today as it was to our founders. We constantly search for inventive and efficient ways to serve our customers, offering complete and comprehensive solutions through local technical expertise in the markets we serve. This foundation of success enables us to offer our customers the inside advantage.
