Kulpsville, PA (May 2010) — For the second consecutive year, Greene, Tweed has demonstrated our commitment to innovative solutions with a Best New Product win for Xycomp® DLF High-Performance Thermoplastic Composites. Competing against a record number of entries, Xycomp DLF was awarded the Design News 2010 Golden Mousetrap in the materials category.
For more than two decades, the Design News Awards Program has recognized engineering innovation and creativity in product design. This year, Golden Mousetrap awards were given in four major categories: Electronics, Motion Control/Automation, Hardware/Software, and Materials/Fastening/ Joining/Assembly. Xycomp DLF was chosen as best new engineered plastic material for its ability to produce complex shapes with 3-D features such as ribs, bosses, gussets and flanges from highly reinforced thermoplastic composite materials.
Xycomp DLF high-performance thermoplastic composites are 30%-80% lighter than metallic materials, offering an excellent replacement option for complex metal parts. Utilizing ProFusion™, our proprietary compression molding system, Xycomp DLF has the capability to form complex shapes with excellent resistance to aerospace fluids, high temperatures and high vibrations for extended component life. In addition, Xycomp offers exceptional FST (flame, smoke and toxicity) performance for interior aircraft components and can be recycled at the end of its service life.
"This recognition for Xycomp DLF highlights our continued commitment to developing the most innovative solutions on the market," says Gary Appleby, General Manager of Greene, Tweed's Aerospace Business. "Our Xycomp material and ProFusion molding capability provide our customers with unique benefits, allowing them to replace heavier metallic components in applications across their platforms."
"Design News congratulates the winners and finalists of the 2010 Golden Mousetrap Awards for the great work they've done to develop new and innovative products for design engineers," says Jennifer Roy, Managing Editor of Design News. "These products, as always, showcase the highly imaginative ways that today's engineers are 'building a better mousetrap,' and we thank them for their contributions."
