Centrifugal Compressors

Throughout its 25-year history in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, Greene, Tweed has focused on delivering solutions that enhance reliability, reduce cost of ownership and ensure safe performance in challenging conditions. These key characteristics are evident in each centrifugal compressor seal we have developed. And with engineering resources worldwide, technical support is available for each application.

Chemraz® perfluoroelastomers (FFKM) are an optimal choice for centrifugal compressor seal applications. Featuring exceptional chemical resistance, they withstand aggressive media such as mercury and hydrogen sulfide. Service temperature ranges from -40°F to 600°F (-40°C to 315°C), and excellent compression set provides a wide operating band. The result is extended MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure), minimized downtime and elimination of unplanned shutdowns.

For RGD (Rapid Gas Decompression) resistance, a series of specialty elastomers has been developed. FKM 944 is the newest, passing ISO 23936-2 with zero damage at 390°F (200°C) with a decompression rate of 2,175 psi (150 bar) per minute. Combining high tensile strength with high elongation, it withstands even the most severe RGD events.

MSE® lip seals are frequently used instead of an elastomer when pressures exceed 80 bar. Consisting of a PTFE sealing device energized by a corrosion-resistant metal spring, the spring applies force to the gland surface to create a tight barrier. This design ensures sealing integrity under high or low pressure, and in non-ideal situations such as gland misalignment.

The Arlon® 4020 labyrinth seal combines a high-performance PEEK material based thermoplastic with a unique tooth design to overcome the limitations of metallic seals. A flexible tooth profile allows for tighter running clearances, lowering mass flow rate and boosting efficiency. And reduced tooth contact loading eliminates deformation for extended seal life. In addition, the Arlon 4020 material features excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for centrifugal compressor seals, as well as high mercury and other severe applications.
