Semicon West 2026:
Scaling Semiconductor Manufacturing for the AI Era

by:Priscilla Hanf

Greene Tweed was back in San Francisco for SEMICON West 2026 this October and the signal from the show floor was unambiguous. The key themes that made the headlines this year: AI, AI, and AI. Nearly every discussion reflected the sustained growth and technological innovation driven by and enabled by AI.

Earlier forecasts anticipated a trillion-dollar semiconductor industry by 2030 – the market surpassed that figure four years ahead of schedule in August 2026. According to SEMI analysts, the semiconductor industry is now projected to hit $1.5+ trillion in 2026 and $2.3+ trillion by 2030. Cloud CAPEX is at an all-time high and is expected to grow by a +43% CAGR from 2024 to 2028. Equipment sales are expected to grow in double-digits at least through 2028. And this unprecedented growth continues.

Scaling Through Integration
How do we, as an industry, support that growth? Beyond the obvious capacity increase initiatives and supply chain dynamics across the ecosystem, it’s all about technology and continued innovation. It was clear from the many keynotes, presentations, and exhibition floor discussions that growth is not only about leading-edge chip and node advancements, but also about heterogeneous integration and the advanced packaging technologies that support it.

Advanced packaging has emerged as a critical enabler of AI performance. It has become the 3D enabler of AI power and performance with important underlying technologies, including hybrid bonding, panel-level packaging, glass substrates, interposer technology, and many others. Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics (CPO) generated significant discussion, reflecting the need for faster data transmission and bandwidth, as copper makes way for optical transmission. For Greene Tweed, these shifts aren’t just market trends to observe. They are engineering challenges our customers face, which directly affect the performance requirements of our sealing solutions and chamber components.

Henry Ma, Director, Semiconductor Sales: “At SEMICON West, our conversations with customers reinforced that continued node advances and the rise of advanced packaging are placing new demands on seals and chamber components. Greene Tweed brings design engineering, materials science and application expertise together to develop solutions for the precise thermal, chemical and contamination-control requirements of next-generation semiconductor manufacturing.”

An industry on the rise – meeting the demand

Semicon West 2026

At SEMICON West, customers highlighted the challenges behind scaling semiconductor manufacturing: increasing capacity, strengthening supply chain resilience, navigating geopolitics, and accelerating the move toward regional manufacturing, all while managing growing process complexity.

For Greene Tweed, supporting customers means addressing these challenges directly. We collaborate early in research and development (R&D), design, and materials innovation while investing substantially in manufacturing capacity, supply-chain resilience, and localized operations.

Magen Buterbaugh, President: “The growth ahead for semiconductor manufacturing will demand more than capacity. It will require trusted innovative partners ready to solve increasingly complex technical and supply chain challenges. Greene Tweed is investing in the people, technology, capabilities and resilient global operations needed to help our customers scale with confidence and advance the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing.”

Innovation at the Core
Industry conversations at SEMICON West reinforced that rapid advances in equipment and manufacturing technology are creating increasingly complex challenges. Front-end node and back-end heterogeneous architecture developments are placing greater demands on sealing solutions and chamber components, as operating conditions become harsher across temperature, chemistry, and vacuum, and contamination becomes an even greater concern.

Addressing these challenges often requires early collaboration across materials science, design engineering, and application expertise. This approach informs Greene Tweed’s sealing solutions and chamber components designed to reduce contamination, extend service life, and support reliability, uptime, and yield.

Shawn McCloskey, Chief Commercial Officer: “The best solutions begin with listening closely to customers and understanding where their processes are headed. By collaborating in early innovation, we can address emerging challenges, from chamber contamination and aggressive chemistries to wider temperature demands, before they affect reliability, uptime or yield.”

Greene Tweed has brought innovation across front-end processes, including high-end etch, clean, electroplating, and many types of deposition, as well as advanced packaging manufacturing. Our advancements are built on a foundation of materials and design engineering and include Chemraz® FFKM, Fusion® FKM, ONX® 600 composite chamber components, and more. One recent innovation is our new smart seal prototype that enables predictive chamber maintenance by integrating with customer automation systems along with our material science. The technology has the potential to improve equipment performance while advancing sustainability objectives.”

Bring us your challenges
Let’s talk innovation. SEMICON always highlights the latest trends and important inflections. Whether it’s R&D for early equipment engineering or finding solutions to extend yield in high-volume manufacturing, Greene Tweed wants to understand your challenges as an equipment provider or fab. Regardless of technology advancements, the end goal remains the same: delivering quality and yield while bringing costs down and increasing sustainability. From Greene Tweed’s standpoint, that innovation starts with the equipment and continues to high volume manufacturing.

The stakes are high and that’s why we live by our “When it Can’t Fail™” position. Bring us your challenges!
